Bonnie Prince Billy aka Will Oldham releases “Best Troubador” as a tribute to one of his eternal heroes, country and folk icon Merle Haggard.
Haggard's work has accompanied Bonnie Prince Billy for at least 25 years now. Not only did he cover a Haggard song at his first public appearance. Even in the following years of his career, Oldham repeatedly referred to Haggard's work and work. Oldham has been planning to record the album for quite a while.
The goal was to take part in the age-old tradition of passing folk songs on to the next generation. Oldham almost put the project on hold when he learned of Merle Haggard's death in April 2016. Instead of recording in a studio in Nashville, Oldham and his fellow musicians retreated to a home studio for a family recording atmosphere. In this way, the memory of Haggard's work was paid dignified tribute through special warmth and intimacy.
The songs on “Best Troubador” come from all of Haggard’s creative phases. From his 1967 album “I Am A Lonesome Fugitive” to his 47th album from 2011, “Working In Tennessee”, it has not become a simple best-of; instead, Oldham curated the song selection based on his personal favorites from Merle's catalog.
