Wordt een soundtrack per definitie achteraf geproducet? Of kan het ook andersom? De score voor de baanbrekende Belgische serie ‘De Dag’ werd gecomponeerd door David Martijn en Roundhouse nog voor er één enkele scène werd opgenomen.
Het ingenieuze script van ‘De Dag’ is van de hand van Julie Mahieu en Jonas Geirnaert. Zeker in de laatste fase van hun schrijven en denken werden ze beïnvloed door de muziek van David Martijn. De soundtrack had zelfs een impact op het tempo van de camerabewegingen en de gelaatsuitdrukkingen van de acteurs. Muziek en film, samen op gelijke hoogte.
‘De Dag’ volgt het verhaal van een bankgijzeling vanuit twee perspectieven. De afwisselende AB-structuur - die voor een traag, claustrofobische en hypnotisch tempo zorgt - vind je ook terug in de muziek. Het resulteert in een unieke sound; ver weg van de klassieke Hollywood-scores en tegelijk heel herkenbaar. Elektronisch en toch heel organisch. Prachtige melodieën met een donker kantje; menselijker wordt het niet.
David Martijn (1980) is vooral bekend als gitarist en toetsenist bij de bekroonde Belgische rockband Goose. In 2004 vervoegde hij Soulwax op hun wereldtournee voor de plaat “Any Minute Now”. Daarnaast maakt David ook een deel uit van Safari Studios, een collectief met een eigen opnamestudio in zijn thuisstad Kortrijk (BE). Hij maakte al soundtracks voor onder meer ‘OdysSea’, een film die magnumfotograaf Carl De Keyzer vier jaar volgde langs de Europese kustlijn. Door de jaren heen ontpopte hij zich tot een van België’s grootste freaks op het gebied van synthesizers.

The highly original concept and script of ‘The Day’ was written by Julie Mahieu and Jonas Geirnaert. Writing the music was a collaborative, creative process; David’s music inspired Julie and Jonas in the last stretch of finishing the script. Even directors Gilles Coulier and Dries Vos effectively took the music as a guiding principle while filming. The music inspired the tempo of the camera movements or lead the emotions of the actors. It’s just fascinating to see how defining a soundtrack can be.
David Martijn (1980) is best known as the guitar player & electronic musician of the award winning Belgian electro rockband GOOSE. In 2004 he was recruited by Soulwax for the world tour of their record “Any Minute Now”. David is apart of the creative collective Safari Studios, operating from their very own recording studio in his hometown Kortrijk (BE). Throughout the years, David has become one of Belgium’s most renowned synth aficionado’s.
In ‘The Day’ a hostage situation is being played out from two sides. The original AB-structure - causing a slow, claustrophobic and hypnotising tempo - was mirrored in the music. The result is a distinct musical identity, instantly recognizable and far away from classic Hollywood scores. An electronic score that sounds organic and human. Beautiful melodies with a raw, dark edge.
