Explaining what 'Maybe Next Year' - the debut album of Those
Who Didn’t - is about isn’t easy: instrumental music doesn’t
come with a lyrical roadmap.
Sure, it would have been easier
if there had been lyrics to go with the music. But that’s
exactly why there are no vocals on the record. There are no
distractions from the raw expression of what the band felt
and how it impacted them.
The album title is a knockdown argument which will sound all
too familiar to many musicians chasing some sort of
recognition in the so-called music industry. Operating in the
margins of contemporary music, rest assured that most of the
efforts are greeted with "Well, maybe next year".
Promising,
and somewhat of a consolation, but you know... it's still next
year.
Disheartening at times, but that hasn’t stopped the
chase for that undefinable thing all artists pursue. Timelines
blur: next week, next month, next year… maybe even in a
next lifetime, if need be. And so, the pursuit continues.
And since the topic is years: the past one has been a tough
one with health struggles, matters of the heart, family affairs,
and mental exhaustion. That undeniable weight made its way
into the music during the writing and recording of this album,
shaping an album that’s unpredictable, tense, and sharpedged. But even in its bleakest moments, 'Maybe Next Year'
doesn’t collapse under its own doom. Instead, it somehow
manages to dissolve into hope. Playing together, on stage or
in the recording studio, revealed a sense of hope and beauty
that allowed patience, making it possible to endure. But
there’s still hunger for whatever comes next.
